VITAMIN D- FAT SOLUBLE VITAMIN :-
- Vitamin D is also called as Fat-Soluble Vitamin.
- Vitamin D is now considered more a pro-hormone than a Vitamin.
- It promotes the absorption as well as deposition of calcium and phosphorus in our bones.
- Adequate amounts of this vitamin can be synthesized in for vitamin D, no recommendation had been made by the earlier ICMR Committee (ICMR, 1990).
- ICMR (2010) has recommended out-situation of minimal exposure to sunlight.
- A daily supplement of 400IU (10mcg) of vitamin D has been specifically recommended.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS :-
- Fatigue.
- Bone pain.
- Muscle weakness, muscle aches or muscle cramps.
- Mood changes, like depression.
What causes vitamin D deficiency?
You can become deficient in vitamin D for different reasons:
- You don't get enough vitamin D in your diet
- You don't absorb enough vitamin D from food (a malabsorption problem)
- You don't get enough exposure to sunlight.
- Your liver or kidneys cannot convert vitamin D to its active form in the body.
- You take medicines that interfere with your body's ability to convert or absorb vitamin D
RISK FACTORS :-
For most adults, vitamin D deficiency is not a concern. However, some groups — particularly people who are obese, who have dark skin and who are older than age 65 — may have lower levels of vitamin D due to their diets, little sun exposure or other factors.
